Are bustiers back?

Monday, July 2, 2012

In fashion, there is an theory called the pendulum swing. Have you heard of it? It's basically the idea, that garments move slowly from one extreme to the next. For example, we have seen the biggest bell bottom jeans, move to the skinniest of skinny jeans. Hems do the same thing, they start dragging the floor and move their way up until we see butt cheeks and then slowly move back the other direction. It's not a very complicated idea and it's much easier to predict fashion when trends actually have some science behind them.

What does this have to do with a bustier? This bra-like top became popular in the 70's and in the past 4 decades we've seen the length of shirts drop almost to our knees, and now the swing is up and bustiers are BACK!

I have to admit, when I saw all the cropped jersey tops pop up last summer, I was not very enthused. When I think of bare midriffs, I think teeny boppers. However, with the rebirth of the more structured bustier I am much more open to the idea. I like the retro feel of most of them, and especially when they are paired with a high waisted skirt or pant! I know this trend is not for everyone, but what do you think? Would you wear this trend?

1. Cropped Tribal Corset top $20.70
2. Cropped Cage Top $20.20
3. Colorblocked Crop Bustier $22.50
4. Pink Bustier Top $30.00
5. Print Crop Top $25.00
6. Polka Dot Bustier Top $33.00

Random Thought: When I hear the word Bustier, I immediately think of the movie Selena. Do you remember the scene where she fights with her dad about wearing the blinged out "bra?"  Well, I do and that will forever be the first thing I associate with this garment :D

I was just about to do a post similar to this! lol I love them, you're right they do have to be styled the right way. I really like it with high waist shorts or skirt. I would totally rock the first one!

PS. I remember that part in Selena, I've seen that movie about a hundred times lol

I actually love this look. It's not that hard to wear if it's long enough and you pair it with high waisted skirt that covers your stomach, like the one on #4. It even looks cute and girl-like rather than sexy and daring.

I followed you by the way.

i think they look great on some people, i really wish i could pull them off! but i don't think they are worth the money because they will be out next season and really where can you wear them appropriately? however if you have the body than you should totally rock it!!

I actually have bustier #5, and I found it very versatile! I've worn it with high waister black trousers and a blazer for dinner dates, and high waisted olive green tailored shorts for the beach. I think if you just pair them with structured pieces, and cover up, these are great fun pieces for your closet!
