Check out this cool kid in 1988! My sunglasses fetish started early! Not to mention my style... I'm mean seriously, how cute was I?!? |
I have over 10 pairs of sunglasses in every shape and size! Most of them cost under $6, simply because I loose or break them so frequently. I can't stomach the thought of buying $180 designer glasses!
I have been seeing some very unique shapes in sunglasses lately and it got me thinking, what's the best shape for my face? and What's the best for you? I have put together just that! A road map of how to pick out the perfect pair of sunnies for every face shape!
If you're a Square:
Square shaped faces are proportional in length and width, have a strong prominent jaw line, square chin, wide cheekbones, and a broad, deep forehead. For Square faces, you will want frames that are more circular/oval in shape to soften the face.
Tips for choosing glasses:
- Round frames are perfect for creating curves and softening square or angular faces
-Cat-eye frames provide interesting curve and contour to square faces
-Gently curved oval frames help minimize angles and lengthen a square face
-Frames should be more horizontal than vertical
-Subtle rimless frames with soft edges add contrast and visual interest to a strong, square face

If you're an Oval:
Oval faces are characterized by balanced proportions, a narrow forehead and jaw line, a chin slightly narrower than the forehead, and typically high cheekbones. The fortunate thing about oval faces is that they can really wear any style of frame. I happen to be an Oval, but trust me, not everything works well.
Tips for choosing glasses:
- Oval faces are encouraged to encouraged to experiment with shapes
- You may want to start with rectangular or butterfly shapes first
- Keep proportions in mind and don't wear anything that is out of proportion with your face. (I've been known to break this rule)

If you're a Heart:
A heart shaped face is characterized by a wide forehead, narrower jaw line, high cheekbones, and a narrow chin. Heart shaped faces are a bit harder to fit glasses to, so it is important to experiment more. Make sure you always stay true to your own aesthetic!
Tips for choosing glasses:
-Butterfly & Cat eye are great for balancing heart shaped faces.
- Round frames in lighter colors also balance and soften a wider forehead.
- Be careful of frames that exaggerate the widest point of your face. Stay away from glasses that are a lot wider at the top than the bottom.

If you're a Circle:
A rounder face is equal in length and width. It is characterized by soft curves and very few angles.
Tips for choosing glasses:
- Choose angular frames to create balance
- Rectangular & Geometric shapes work best
-Frames that are more horizontal than vertical make the face appear longer and thinner

All of these tips are just loose guidelines. As you know there are no rules in fashion! I am all about having fun and experimenting, so if you have a round face and want to wear round glasses, I say do it! But if you have been struggling to find a pair of glasses that suit your bone structure, hopefully this will help you :)
Are you a sunglasses junkie like me? What are your favorite shapes to wear?

This could have been written by me! My poor eyes cannot tolerate the sun and glare, even on overcast days, just like yours. And just like you, I will probably never buy expensive sunglasses because I misplace them so often. I always keep a handful of pairs in my car, in my husband's car, in my purse- I don't want to be without. The only problem I have is figuring out what shape my face is! I just can't do it!
Thanks for the photos and examples. It's much more easier to identify my face shape by looking through these photos. I'm pretty sure that I've an oval shape face ;).
