My favorite things I've learned from {Pinterest}

Thursday, July 19, 2012

 I assume everyone has hitched a ride on the Pinterest train right? Well, If you haven't opened up pandora's box, you really are missing out! Pinterest is in my opinion, one of the coolest websites founded to date! I am constantly learning new things, being inspired and keeping up with current trends, all via Pinterest. I have pinned over 400 DIY's, recipes and clever tricks, and I am constantly sharing the cool stuff I am learning. I have put together a list of brilliant ideas I have learned most recently.

Tip #1 - Pot holder turned curling iron holder
I travel quite a bit, and there is nothing worse than being in a hurry and trying to pack your scorching hot straightener. I have wrapped mine in towels, socks and various other materials to keep it from melting everything in my suitcase. When I came across this nifty idea, I immediately kicked myself for not thinking of it first! This is so easy, all you need is a pot holder with a pocket, you slip your hot hair tool inside and roll it up! If you want to be fancy about it, you can fold the pot holder and sew along the bottom and side to make a sleeve :)

Tip #2 - The perfect peeled egg
In our family we boil a lot of eggs! We use boiled eggs in garden, pasta & potato salads. We also make deviled eggs for every holiday too. My mother-in-law and I always compete to see who can get the prettiest eggs after peeling them (I always win). We usually end up with about half of the eggs are smooth and half look like meteors. I saw this tip on Pinterest and I tried it immediately! All you have to do is sprinkle some Baking soda into the water while boiling your eggs and the shell comes off without tearing up the egg. I have tried this technique repeatedly and it always works!

Tip #3 - Painting The Base of your Walls
I don't know about you, but I loathe painting my house. It always seems like a good idea until you start doing it. Painting around the base of the walls is the worst! It takes forever to tape it off, and then the paint still bleeds through... ugh! I recently saw this image (no link attached) and I thought it looked like a great idea! I am yet to try it, but logistically it seems like it would work really well :)

Doesn't it suck when your favorite sweater starts to get knotted up under your arms and sides? I have spent hours trying to de-pill my clothes. I have bought some of those junk "as seen on tv" tools to help too... they never work. This idea though, I think is a keeper! To de-pill your clothes, simply take a disposable razor and gently "shave" the fabric. (Click the link to get more helpful tips)

Tip #5 - How to rescue broken make-up
We've all been there, that moment when you drop your brand new compact or eyeshadow... major bummer! Fear no more, some ingenious person figured out how to rescue broken make up. It's really simple, and I've tried it a few times myself. Just take your broken make-up and add rubbing alcohol. Not a ton, but enough to soak the compact. Then using your finger, smoosh the make up back together. When it dries and the alcohol evaporates, your make up will be new again!

Tip #6 - Home made mini funnel cakes
I LOVE funnel cakes, they are in the top 5 on my list of favorite desserts! Besides being extremely fattening, they cost darn near and arm and a leg these days! My husband and I were at an event recently and they were selling funnel cakes for $8... umm no thank you. I did however find this great recipe to make them at home! It seems really easy and you don't need a deep fryer! Click the link for the whole recipe. I love that she used a circular cookie cutter to get such a uniform shape :)

Tip #7 - Lady Gaga inspired hair bow
How freaking cute is this? I'm not sure if it's age appropriate for myself, but I'm going to try it anyways! I love this idea for little girls, or even big girls who are young at heart! Would you ever wear this hair do?
I am one of those people who rarely runs out of make up. Usually, I end up just throwing make up away because it gets old and cakey. I have this problem especially with mascara. That's why I love this tip about adding saline solution to clumpy mascara to thin it out and extend it's life just a little longer. :)

Tip #9 - How to get the perfect temp on a steak
This tip is near and dear to my heart! I am a griller, and I love to cook steak! I actually cook it better than my hubby :D My dad taught me how to grill when I was younger and I have worked in a few steak houses, so I am pretty good at getting the right temp. I personally like my steak medium rare, and I hate well done. It's a really big bummer when you over cook the steak, it totally ruins it. I love this tip below though, it gives you a good idea of how to tell when the steak is the temperature you desire! When you cook a steak you always press your finger or tongs in the center to see how squishy it is, the harder the steak, the more well done. Check out this tip to get a perfect steak every time :)

What do you think of my tips? What is the most interesting thing you have learned from Pinterest?
