What's Trending in Thrift: Floral

Friday, March 30, 2012

Yay, it's another week of What's trending in Thrift!! Earlier this week I posted a little recap from the April issue of People Style Watch. While flipping through the magazine I discovered gobs and gobs of floral... everywhere!! Crazy thing is, I've also found a ton of floral prints in the thrift stores too! I put together my weekly findings for you :)

I was actually really close to buying the San Souci dress, but I felt it was a little juvenile for my age bracket.. still adorable though. The Love Tease dress would be great for a 14 year old :)

Found this darling Chinese Laundry clutch... but I have no real use for it and I would have loved to buy this blouse, but unfortunately it was not my size :(

I loved these two floral prints most. I would have bought that Top Shop skirt in a heartbeat if it would have been my size. I also loved the watercolor floral print on this unbranded blouse!

Oh Forever 21, you are always so great at staying on trend. This tank is lovely and super cute! The Ann Taylor jacket, while on trend, isn't my fave of the bunch.

I have seen way more floral prints than I am sharing, so keep your eyes peeled next time you're out thrifting, the blossoms are among us!!

Maxi Glam

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

The other day we decided to take our two little rug rats out for a walk. They absolutely love being outside in the sun. Problem is, they go crazy when we take them out. They run all over smelling everything and nearly pulling me over doing it. We totally failed with leash training, but at least they're not more than 20 lbs :D

A little story about my babies, We bought Beasley (the big one) from a Chihuahua rescue in Indiana and he has been a single child for 3 years. We felt bad that he didn't have a sibling so we got Booker this past summer. Apparently, we missed the memo that Beasley did not want a brother and now he's pissed at us. He tolerates his little brother but still gives us that look like, "Really guys? You had to go and screw up our little thing here, didn't ya!"

It was such a nice day out, and I had to show off my new maxi :) My whole outfit cost under forty bucks!!

Meet Beasley & Booker!!

They were not enjoying their walk being interrupted by pesky pictures

Style Watch Recap {April 2012}

Friday, March 23, 2012

Back in January I did a post summarizing my favorite things in the latest issue of People Style Watch magazine (my absolute fave). I really wanted to make this type of post more of a regular occurrence, but my subscription expired and it took a while to get back in track, yada, yada, yada... It has been making me crazy to see the magazine on the rack at the grocery store, I have been biting my nails waiting for my copy to come. I finally received the April issue this week. Oh my word! There is so much to talk about! I used to be an "all about fall" kinda gal, but spring is totally inspiring me now! I cannot stand how crazy all the prints and colors are making me! (in a good way) As a self proclaimed artist, I am overjoyed by the amount of "art" that is being seen in fashion. I love, love, love that designers are exploring the entire spectrum of color and I love all the amazingly unique prints.... it's just splendid!  Okay, getting over my "fashion-gasim" onto the magazine!

Wedges: I love a good wedge! My husband thinks they are the ugliest of the high heels, but I think they are the most comfortable, so I win! I also love how bold the wedge is this season. For a girl like me I don't do a lot of flair in my clothing, so I am a sucker for a flashy accessory.

Prints: Prints are just not going away! If you have been avoiding them, you are going to have to succumb eventually ;D I am not big in the florals but I am loving the prints with little birds and horses lately!

White: Notify all the brides, fashion is taking back the color white!! I hate that white is so often associated with wedding gowns. I for one am glad we are seeing it's return to mainstream fashion. I cannot wait to find a great new "LWD" (Little White Dress)!!

Printed Jeans: Okay, I have to be honest, I am not 100% on board with this trend. I actually am not even 20% on board with this trend. I think it will be short lived, so my advice don't spend too much money on a pair of these. They are going to hard for a mass majority to wear, they will only flatter a few body types. I have seen a few discrete prints I might wear, but probably not for this pear shaped gal! There is a caption at the top that says they are slimming... I have to disagree!

Colored Jeans: If you would have asked me what I thought about colored jeans a few years ago, I would have barfed on you, well not really but... you get my sentiments. Somehow, I have softened to them, okay fine, I actually really like them now. I have a pair of purple ones, green ones and I hope to soon have some cobalt ones too. I love the pastel ones in theory... but in reality I'm a little misshapen to wear them. You see light colors aren't exactly slimming, so It's gonna take a miraculous pair of dessert colored jeans to make it into my closet. I am however up for the challenge to find some ;)

Still speaking of colored jeans, I cannot believe Aeropostale carries these colored skinnies for under $25! I am not exactly Aero's target demo, but I might find my way in for a pair at that price!

Cut offs: Umm... yes please! I love me some cut off shorts.... probably due to my trailer park upbringing :D. Last summer I cut off at least three pairs of my jeans and wore them all summer. They weren't exactly in style, but I wore them anyways :) I cannot wait to DIY a few more pairs of my jeans. Hint: it'll probably happen to my colored jeans first!

Lady Like: I was watching the news today and they were discussing Kate Middleton's fashion and her lady like appearance. Well she's a freaking duchess, so she needs to have that persona. The rest of us, well, we can have a little more fun with it. I love Jamie Chung's girly look and I think it can be done in a fancy version or a casual one. I will be working on a post reflecting my version soon ;)

New Online Shop Alert!! Shopsosie, is an online retailer that just hit my radar. It reminds me of Lulu's. It has really cute trendy stuff at very reasonable prices!

Star Style: Miss Michelle Williams is on everyone's radar after her gorge Oscar dress, so it's no surprise that I want her look today too! I have been pining for a white and black blazer for months, and those cobalt  cropped jeans... totally up my alley!

Sweet Deal: I love Style watch Mag for a variety of reasons, but mostly because they share little nuggets of info like this! I love these flats and $40 ain't bad ;) Not to mention WantedShoes.com has free shipping!

Cut Out Booties: At first look, I wasn't really into these... but I think they are growing on me. I love nude shoes these days, so perhaps I will have to try a pair of these out soon :)

There is so much more that I could have shared, but I didn't want to overwhelm you. I think the April issue is great and has some inspiring ideas! What do you think of the Spring trends thus far??

DIY Painted Purse

Wednesday, March 21, 2012

As you may know, I have been on a bit of a painting/DIY spree lately. A few months ago I glittered a pair of heels and a few weeks ago I painted a pair of flats. After I color blocked my leopard flats, I had some of the gold paint left and I wanted to color block a purse I had lying around. I found this F by Fortuna Valentino bag at the thrift store for six bucks, so no harm if I didn't like the results, right? In fact, I was actually very pleased with my results!

The Original

I didn't really have a plan, so I just started painting specific sections

I painted the pocket flap, the entire bottom and a little section near the handles. I didn't want to go too overboard with it

The Final Product. I love that I painted the bottom, it gives it a surprise element :)

How to Clean {almost} any fabric

Sunday, March 18, 2012

I received a question from a reader the other day, asking me how I care for my garments without going to the dry cleaner. Funny she should ask, because I was just thinking about sharing my thoughts on how to optimize garment life. Being that 90% of my clothing comes from thrift stores, I like to wash it before I wear it. Sometimes however, I will buy a silk blouse (which I only paid $4 for) and then the dry cleaner wants to charge me $12.. my four dollar shirt just became a $16 shirt and then I become a tight wad :D

I always try to spot clean and wash things by hand before I even consider taking it to a professional. I have gotten ink out of leather, oil out of silk and make up off of lace. There are a ton of home remedies for cleaning and I think they are severely under used! I want to share a few tricks I have acquired over the past few years with you.

First, read the TAGS!! In the 70's congress passed a law mandating that manufacturers tell you what is in a garment, where it was made and suggested cleaning tips. If a garment tag states "hand wash," it is probably best to hand wash it....

Also, I know this is common sense, but I never wash anything in hot water (except towels). Use cold water on all your clothes, it gets them just as clean. If you choose to use the washing machine, use the delicate cycle, turn your garments inside out and put them inside a pillow case so nothing snags inside the wash.

As for the stuff that cannot be thrown into the washer and is recommended to be dry cleaned, I always try to figure out a way I can clean it at home first! Google is my best friend and I always use it to see various techniques out there. I have compiled the links I use when washing my specialty fabrics at home :)

Green Machine

Friday, March 16, 2012

Being that tomorrow is St. Patrick's Day, I decided to share my new favorite green blouse with you. I saw this blouse a month or so ago at a thrift store. It caught my eye then, but when I tried it on, I wasn't feeling it. Oddly enough, I went back to the same store weeks later and it caught my eye again. I picked it up and my girlfriend reminded me that I had looked at the exact same shirt before hand. This time I decided to take it home and see how I could style it. In thrift stores you rarely see the same thing twice, so I took it as a sign and I couldn't be happier! I don't know what I was thinking the first time, but I have worn the heck out of this thing!! This look cost $32.00

I hope you all have a safe and happy St. Patty's :)

What's Trending in Thrift: Yellow

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Last week I introduced a new segment of {mtc}, called "What's trending in Thrift." Previously, I discussed how shopping at thrift stores doesn't mean you cannot keep up with current trends. The same hold true this week. Lately, the color yellow cannot be ignored. It is in just about every magazine I pick up! This past fall, it was all about mustard, and for spring/summer the hue has been mellowed out. It now appears in banana, lemon, custard and even neon! While shopping at a Goodwill today, I was overwhelmed by how many second hand yellow garments I found! Most of my life I have avoided wearing yellow, but I am kind of digging it this season. What are your thoughts??

P.S. I didn't purchase any of these items. If you live in the LA area and are interested, All of these images were taken at the Goodwill in Stevenson Ranch :)

The Purple Zebra

Monday, March 12, 2012

If you have been following me, you may remember I posted an outfit a few weeks ago featuring green skinnies. I then found these crazy purple ones a few days later. They have been sitting in my closet for well over a month. Every one who sees them, roughly has the same reaction and gives me a reluctant "okay." No one is knocking down my door asking where these beauties came from. That being said, I knew I had to put together a bangin' outfit and prove, that I do in fact know how to dress myself :D My girlfriend was cleaning out her closet a few weeks ago and gifted me this gorgeous blouse as well. In my mind, if you're gonna go bold with purple pants, why stop there, you might as well put on a zebra print, right? Agree or not, I think this look is super cute :) And it only cost me $38.98
