Taking care of your skin in your 20's, 30's and 40's

I don't know if you know this about me, but I am pretty concerned about aging. I know laugh lines and wrinkles are supposed to show your character, but I'm not trying to age any faster than I have to. My obsession with anti-aging "tricks" began when I was in high school. I used to put my mom's eye make up on for her sometimes, you know get her all gussied up. And I discovered the sagging that happens to eyelids as we age. My mom looks great for her age, but there are areas that she would like tighter. It was then, that I started to worry about my own skin, and how quickly I would loose elasticity. I started out with sunglasses and sunblock. I figured as a teen that was the least I could do. Till this day I cannot go outside (even on an overcast day) without a pair of sunnies. I am proud to say, I am on the other side of 25, and I still have zero signs of crows feet (knock on wood)!

It wasn't until I turned 25 that I began researching anti-aging creams and different regiments. My mom called me one day and yelled at me to remember to moisturize my neck. Apparently she noticed sagging around her neck and was not happy about it lol. In the past few years I have read a million different articles and product reviews on how to retain youth. I decided to put together a little summary for you and what you should be doing in each decade of the aging process. Even if you're not 40 yet, I like to plan ahead!

1. Sunblock: wear sunscreen every day, at least SPF 30. Don't forget to put it around your eyes, and an SPF in your make up is not enough. Find a light, non-greasy sunscreen to wear under your make up.

2. Exfoliate Regularly: By removing dead skin cells, your skin will feel softer and look brighter. Not to mention, exfoliating will help fight acne and wrinkles. (Try:Earth Therapeutics Exfoliating gloves $4.71 )

3. Stop Smoking! Cigarettes cut the oxygen off to your skin and lowers estrogen levels, which break down collagen and reduce elasticity. Smoking is also associated with deeper wrinkles.

4. Moisturize Daily:Hydrated skin is more resistant to aging (Try: Aveeno Clear Complexion $14.99)

5. DON'T Sunbathe or Use a Tanning Bed: The sun is the enemy of youth. UV ray are harmful to the skin, as well as artificial lights. If you need a little healthy glow, check out my post on self tanners.

6. Use a Retinoid at Night: Retinoic-acid treatments fight wrinkles, unclog pores, clear acne, even out skin tone and can fend off some cancers! (Try: Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair $19.99)

1. Maintain a Healthy Weight: Yo-yo dieting, with fluctuations of 10 pounds or more, can lead to facial sagging.

2. Continue using a Retinoid: Retinoids treat both acne and wrinkles. (Try: Dr. Brandt Pores No More Vaccum Cleaner $45)

3. Add Antioxidant Serum: Antioxidants shield your skin from free radicals, better than sunscreen alone. Look for products with "green tea" or "blue ginger." (Try: Juice Beauty Antioxidant Serum $45)

4. Exercise 4-5 times week: Exercising increases blood flow to your skin and boosts endorphins to help healing.

5. Use an Eye Cream: If you haven't yet, start using an eye cream. Find one with a retinol, peptides or both. (Try NuFace Smoother Peptide Serum $84)

6. Manage Stress: Chronic anxiety speeds up aging, it can cause not only pimples, but dryness, redness and wrinkles. 

1. Take Vitamin D: Doctors recommend taking 3,000 international units of Vitamin D per day. Vitamin D helps improve not only your skin and hair, but your bones as well.

2. Lasers: Dermatologists can use laser treatments to brighten skin, obliterate fine lines and hyperpigmentation.

3. Peptide Cream: Peptides essentially treat every sign of aging and can be incorporated into any skin care regiment.

4. Richer Moisturizers: Find a moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, ceramides or glycerin. All will help plump and smooth your skin. (Try: Weleda Skin Food $14)

5. Add Caffeine: In addition to your regular eye cream, try a cooling roller-tip gel with caffeine to reduce puffiness and bags under your eyes. (Try: Clinique Even Better Eyes Dark Circle Corrector $39.50)

I have been implementing quite a few of these tips for years. I know I need to use sunblock more regularly, but I do not sunbathe, so I feel I'm slightly better off. I am looking into getting a Retinoid cream, along with an antioxidant cream. I already take vitamin D and I'll look into the peptide creams. I want to maintain my skins elasticity for as long as I can! I'm not opposed to a little nip and tuck when I get older, I'd just like to try a more natural approach first.
