Fake It Fashionista

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

You've all heard the phrase "fake it till you make it," and let me tell you, I have my days where I am just faking it! Some days I don't feel like putting make up on, blow drying my hair or picking out a cute outfit. On those days... you just have to fake it. Here's my cheat sheet for "faking it" when you're just not feeling it!

1. Make Up - If you do nothing else, put on some foundation, blush and mascara. Those three beauty products will at least show the world you tried.

2. Don't feel like doing your hair? Dry shampoo and a top knot are the way to go! Top knots and ponytails are all the rage these days, people will think you are being fashion forward instead of lazy.

3. Details/Unique Pieces: I find that when I wear clothing with intricate details, it automatically makes whatever I'm wearing look more stylish. Find garments/accessories that are unique and different. You will be able to pepper those into your regular wardrobe and create a posh look! Example: the other day I wore black yoga pants to work, but I paired them with a top with lace details and an open back. People we so distracted by my top, they didn't even notice I was being incredibly lazy!

4. Accessories: No matter how plain your look is, put on a few accessories. I have rules against wearing a statement necklace with dangling earrings, you must pick one or the other... but at least add one. Adding a few accessories can jazz up any look, and communicate to the world that you put a lot of thought into your look!

Here are a couple examples of how these tips can be put to use:

First, are you that busy mom or student who lives in your jeans and sneakers? I don't want to take your jeans away from you, but rather, give you a stylish twist. You should swap out your gym shoes for a pair of cute flats. Then, add a few accessories and a printed sweater to complete the look! Don't worry about matching, just keep all your accessories the same metal (ie gold or silver) and keep your color palette neutral.

If you're more of the professional type, I bet you're sick of boring suits! But just because you have a strict dress code at work doesn't mean you have to be dull! Start with your regular three piece suit routine, instead of reaching for your worn out black pumps, grab a statement shoe instead. Cheetah is a great print, and it matches everything. I also suggest investing in a red pump, they'll make you feel sexy beyond belief! After you've nailed down what shoes you're going to wear, throw on a couple jewelry items and hit the door.

I know this might seem like a lot of work the first time you try it, but I promise it will get easier! The more you practice these tips, the more second nature they become. For me, figuring out which cocktail ring I am going to wear is like finding my car keys; It's innate and part of my subconscious morning check list!

I agree completely that a few key pieces can totally transform your look! I think oxfords and boat shoes are basically sneakers, so there is no excuse not to wear cute shoes. I really need to get myself something leopard print...
